Creigh Deeds Trying to Have his Cake and Eat it Too

The Fraternal Order of Police and the Virginia Sheriff’s Association take opposite positions on collective bargaining.  Instead of taking a principled stand, Creigh Deeds decided he would appeal to both groups and tell each group exactly what it wanted to hear.  If how you campaign tells how you will govern life will not be good for Virginia if we elect a man with this little principle.

RPV has a very good video on this issue.

McDonnell Embarks on Month Long Statewide RV Tour: 1500+ Miles first week!

According to our future Governor’s website, McDonnell began a month long RV tour across the commonwealth yesterday, promoting “New Jobs” and “More Opportunities”. The tour kicked off Saturday, August 8th at the Patrick County Peach Festival in Stuart and ends on Labor Day,Monday, September 7th when the RV tour concludes with an appearance in the Buena Vista Labor Day Parade.

Speaking about the tour Bob stated, “I can’t wait to get out and visit Virginians in every region of our beautiful Commonwealth. Serving as Virginia’s Attorney General I’ve had the opportunity to represent all Virginians at a statewide level. A large part of that service involved traveling Virginia and listening to citizens and what is on their minds. That continues with this tour. And I’m also going to be doing some talking of my own of course! I’m excited about taking our bold positive campaign proposals on energy, education, transportation, small business and every other issue directly to Virginians in their cities and counties. This is a difficult time in Virginia’s history. Virginians need jobs, they need opportunities. That’s what our campaign is all about.”

According to his website, within the first week of the tour alone Bob will visit five major regions of the Commonwealth, traveling over 1500 miles. Detailed public schedules of the RV tour for the rest of the month will be released daily in addition to the weekly public schedule put out on Fridays.

Where in the world is Tim Kaine?

Many critics have said that Governor Tim Kaine hasn’t done enough to help out Democrats. But Democrats! It is not his fault. He is a very busy man. After all, his “part time job” takes him all across the country

See for yourself. Kaine released his schedule for last week, showing numerous visits to other states. Click here.

Doesn’t Virginia deserve a full time Governor? When asked if he would resign, rather than give a serious answer, he made a jab at Palin instead.

Pathetic.

Real Transportation Plans!

Finally some real transportation plans! For far to long, VA politicans just talk about transportation. For once, Bob McDonnell has presented us with real solutions. Among his ideas are,

  • Privatize Virginia’s Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and dedicate proceeds to transportation
  • Pass legislation to capture increased revenue from growth in port operations, and invest in regional transportation projects
  • Take percentage of sales tax collected in Northern Virginia and put in regional transportation account
  • Issue $3 billion in available bonds for transportation, and support future bond issuance of $1 billion for highly congested areas
  • Expand 70mph speed limit, currently only allowed on stretch of Interstate 85 in southern Virginia, to sections of other interstates in Commonwealth
  • Dedicate percentage of new revenue growth to transportation
  • Spend 75% of future surplus funds on transportation
  • Dramatically expand Public-Private Partnership agreements for major priority projects
  • Protect Transportation Trust Fund
  • Audit VDOT to find and eliminate waste and inefficiencies; Seek greater autonomy from time-consuming federal regulations
  • Seek federal approval for use of 2nd and 3rd year stimulus dollars for transportation projects now
  • Support HOT lanes
  • Enact border tolling of traffic coming into Virginia from North Carolina along I-85 and I-95
  • Dedicate percentage of revenue from future offshore drilling to transportation
  • Prioritize transportation projects. Top of list: Widen I-66 in and out of Beltway; Complete, within budget and on time, rail to Dulles; Complete I-495 and I-395/95 HOT Lane Projects; Upgrade Route 460; Find consensus for Third Crossing and move forward; Build High Speed Passenger Rail; Improve I-81; Coalfields Expressway Completion
  • Provide telework tax credits
  • Create bipartisan transportation task force, led by former governors and congressmen, to evaluate Virginia’s transportation system and propose improvements
  • Employ smart traffic technologies, light synchronization and new traffic management systems

Tim Kaine Agrees With Ken Cuccinelli, Decides to Call Special Session

    Posted on : 21-07-2009 | By : willie.deutsch | In : Uncategorized

One of the biggest stories in the Attorney General’s race is Ken Cuccinelli’s call for a special session to deal with the Melendez-Diaz v. Massacheusetts decision. While Shannon thought Cuccinelli was going to far, and wanted Kaine to find an administrative solution, it now appears that Tim Kaine agrees with Ken Cuccinelli.

The AP is reporting that a Virginia lawmaker says Kaine will call a special session to deal with the issue later today.

RICHMOND, Va. – A Virginia lawmaker says Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine will call a special session to deal with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that’s having repercussions in the state’s courts.

The legislator spoke on the condition of anonymity Tuesday night because he was not authorized to pre-empt the governor’s announcement. Kaine has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday, but his office says only that he will make two public safety announcements.

A second legislator, House Democratic Leader Ward Armstrong of Henry County, said Kaine has told him he’s leaning toward calling a special session.

The announcement is expected to take place sometime later today.
Cuccinelli was the person who realized how important this issue. He accurately predicted DUI cases would be dismissed, and made the difficult but correct decision. Once again he has stood up for what is best for Virginians, even if it may be politically difficult. Kaine’s decision to side with a candidate from the opposite party over his own candidate for Attorney General means that he realized administrative solutions were impossible, and the special session is what is necessary to fix this problem. His actions will validate Cuccinelli’s foresight, and accurate understanding of the law.

V.A. to close 19 Rest Areas Statewide

    Posted on : 21-07-2009 | By : Ashley O. Johnson | In : Bill Bolling, Bob McDonnell

As students and families hit the road this summer, those inevitable “pit stops” will likely become more of a hassle, and far less convenient to those on a time crunch on the journery to their destination.  The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and government officials, headed by Governor D-Tim Kaine, have decided to close several rest stops across Virginia. The Commonwealth is closing 19 Interstate highway rest stops, including the two on I-66 at milemarker 48 in Manassas and the two on I-95 at milemarker 155 in Dale City. Several drivers have voiced their concerns stating that the traffic will become heavier for those in need of a break, and in search for an exit ramp. However, we VA citizens “have been assured” that the mayhem likely to ensue is for our own benefit. ABC 7 reports that an estimated $2.6 billion will be saved in construction, service and administrative cuts over the next six years, including laying off highway workers and allowing the grass on medians and roadsides to grow longer. The worst economic downturn in 70 years, declining revenues from gasoline taxes and reductions in federal highway funding are blamed for the cuts. The DOT states that they picked the 19 rest stops methodically and with much consideration, resulting in most of them being in less rural areas, and surrounded by other able-bodied, and tourist welcome facilities. However, not everyone agrees. One motorist reported to ABC 7 ”…If you turn off the tourists they’ll just keep going to the next state,” said Carl Moodt. “Don’t they realize that? That’s disappointing.”

Virginia Gubernatorial candidates Bob McDonnell, and Creigh Deeds, pledge that they will reopen the “shuttered highway stops.” GOP candidate McDonnell states that he would get the job done within 90 days of his election. ”Shutting down Virginia’s rest stops will negatively impact motorists, impair public safety, weaken our tourism industry, and slap a “Closed” sign on the Commonwealth,” McDonnell said. Inside NOVA.com, reports that McDonnell, a former state attorney general proposed initiatives such as an “Adopt-a-Safety-Rest-Stop” program modeled after the “Adopt-a-Highway” initiative, and having criminal offenders sentenced to community service perform landscape and clean-up work at rest areas. Republicans Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, and Rep. Frank R. Wolf, also criticized the closures Monday. The fellow republicans stated their issue with Transportation Secretary Pierce R. Homer, addressing his tie-breaking vote to move $9 Million out of the VDOT paving budget. “I understand the financial pressures that VDOT is trying to relieve, but this is not the right way to bring your budget into balance,” Bolling wrote to Homer, who formerly worked in Prince William County’s government.

The rest-stops were closed at the beginning of this month, effective July 1st. While no definite decisions have been made to re-open the facilities, as mentioned, both Bob McDonnell and Bill Bolling have taken strides to put the voices and opinions of the citizens of VA into action. McDonnell’s promise to re-open the facilities within 90 days of his election, coupled with Bolling’s outspoken stand against the mea culpa propagated by Governor Kaine and Transportation Secretary Homer, the republicans are ready to fight for the rights of the citizens of VA, and ensure the prosperity of the Commonwealth for years to come.

Major Democrat Donor Endorses Bob McDonnell

Today in a press conference Sheila Crump Johnson a self described lifelong democrat endorsed Bob McDonnell. Sheila Johnson lives in Middleburg, VA is “Co-Founder of Black Entertainment Television, a local business owner, and noted philanthropist and entrepeneur.” She is also the world’s first female African-American billionaire. One of the causes she has donated heavily to is the Democrat Party. According to VPAP, since 2003 she has donated $654,378 to Democrat candidates. This includes about $600,000 to Tim Kaine and his PAC, and another $1,000 each to Terry McAuliffe and Brian Moran. Her one donation to a Republican so far seems to be part of her effort to defeat Jill Vogel’s campaign for State Senate.

In the endorsement, Sheila made it clear that she believed that Bob McDonnell will help bring about the economic recovery this state desperately needs.

“Make no mistake, these are tough economic times for all Virginians. Unemployment is on the rise and families are struggling to stay in their homes. We need bold and innovative leadership to move our state forward and that’s why I’ve chosen to support Bob McDonnell for Governor. He has shown me that he has the right vision and the executive leadership skills that will guide Virginia through these challenging times. He understands that we have to help businesses in our state – both big and small – thrive so that we put Virginians back to work. I’m proud to endorse Bob McDonnell to be our next governor.”

This will help McDonnell among two of his weakest demographics, African-American and NOVA voters. While Sheila courageously took a stand for the good of the commonwealth, it will be interesting to watch Democrat bloggers turn on her.

In other news, Creigh Deeds talks about horse manure in his stocking when asked about creating jobs in south west Virginia.
